【习语注释】

fly表示“苍蝇”，ointment表示“油膏；药膏”，该习语的字面意思是“药膏上的一只苍蝇”，引申义为“美中不足”，主要用来喻指原本完美的事物所存在的小缺陷，但这个小缺陷却往往是令人难以忍受的。

【习语运用】

another hotel seems to be a fly in the ointment, blocking part of the beautiful ocean view.

美中不足的是有另外一家旅馆挡住了部分美丽的海景。

i find the house wonderful, but there is a fly in the ointment: it is too far from the town. 我觉得那所房子非常好，但是有点美中不足，就是离市区太远了。

【闲话习语】

该习语最早可追溯到《圣经》里的用语，因为《圣经里经常会出现有关用药油擦拭身体的描述，比如：“dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.” 该习语的现代版本在十八世纪就有书面运用的记录，比如在英国的哲学家和作家john norris的作品a practical treatise concerning humility（1707）中，就有这么一句话：“’tis that dead fly in the ointment of the apothecary.” 其中的apothecary表示“药剂师”。
